Event Camp Vancouver 2011

A friend recommended that I check out Event Camp Vancouver 2011 (ECV11) held just this past weekend at the Vancouver Convention Center. I noticed that they were encouraging people to ‘attend’ as remote attendees for the sessions on Saturday and Sunday so I signed up (plus it was free!).

ECV11 used a live stream, courtesy of Sonic Foundry (@SonicFoundry), to connect the speakers, audience and remote attendees. There was also a group of event professionals from Montreal who attended virtually for the entire conference. Collectively, they were known as the Montreal pod. The virtual audience had a twitter host, Liz King from Liz King Events New York (@lizkingevents). Marc Smith of Amuse Events in Vancouver (@amuse_events) was our on-site virtual audience rep (or as he referred to it, social media concierge). Liz’s job was to encourage interaction between all the remote attendees while Marc facilitated the discussions between the live and virtual audiences. The sessions themselves had Glenn Thayer of Thayer Productions (@glennthayer) hosting and moderating.

The Importance of Due Diligence

I moved back to Vancouver at the beginning of May 2010 and immediately started trying to land a job with an events company that I could learn from and benefit from their expertise and experience. I came across a job posting looking for event planning interns for a locally well-known event. Although the internship was unpaid, I thought that this might be a great way of getting the experience that I craved while making important industry contact so I applied.

A couple of days later, I got an email from the producer asking me to come in for an interview. Perfect. I went for my interview the next week and by the time I left, I had mixed feelings about the internship. Although the producer was very nice throughout the interview, his expectations of the internship weren’t based in reality. He wanted an intern that could work 35+ hours a week for 6-7 months. When I mentioned that I would need to take a 2nd job to earn some sort of income, he vetoed that immediately. His reasoning was that this event and internship would demand the full attention and time of the eventual intern. I believe in being honest and straightforward so I told him that while my priority was gaining events planning experience, I still needed to earn an income, especially over such a long period of time. He promised me that the opportunity was worth it due to the contacts and experience I’d gain. I left telling him that I would have to think about it.

New Direction

This past weekend, I was fortunate to be part of Event Camp Vancouver 2011. I was inspired by several of the speakers as well as event professionals that I met through the conference. Because of that, I’ve decided to take a new direction with my blog.

Since I’ve been back in Vancouver, my main focus has been to obtain a position with an established and successful events production company. I really wanted to be immersed in event planning and learn from event professionals who’ve been doing this for years. However, I quickly learned that this industry is extremely competitive and has high barriers to entry. The key is timing and who you know. Since timing is something I can’t control, I’ve been doing everything I can to meet and network with experienced event professionals. That brings me back to this blog… I’m going to start chronicling my journey in the events industry. I’ll start with posting experiences/conversations I’ve had and people and companies I’ve met so far. If you’re also trying to break into the business, you might find this useful and I invite you to share your journey as well. I know everything I learned so far has only made me more determined to be successful.

Again, thanks for being patient with the changes. As you can tell, I’ve moved from Blogger to WordPress with the hopes that this platform can offer more custom options. I’m still playing around with the design so please bear with me.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. I love feedback.

Cheers,

Priscilla

Re-Vamp

I know it’s been a long time since I’ve posted and to be completely honest, I’ve sort of lost the itch to do so. I’ve also been struggling with what to post. This blog was originally created to keep those at home updated with my various travels but for the near future, I will be grounded in beautiful Vancouver (not a bad thing at all)… which bears the question, what now? Well, I will be experimenting with content, design and widgets in an effort to make blogging a part of my life again so bear with me.

Hong Kong

This trip marks the 2nd time in 1 year I’ve visited the insane city of HK. My dad has been here for over a month, so we flew down to spend a couple of weeks with him and his siblings. Since this trip also marks the very first time Rosalyn or Nathan has ever visited HK AND my mom’s first trip back in over 20 years, there was a lot of excitement to be had! I absolutely love HK – I’ve visited 3 times already and have already slipped into the ‘guide’ role.

The focus on this trip is to get the application started for our HK citizenship cards, visit family and friends and eat lots of yummy food.

I’ll post a more detailed post later with pictures..
